Norma Editorial is a Spanish comics publisher, with its headquarters in Barcelona.^[3]

Founded in 1977 by Rafael Martínez, it publishes both original Spanish comics (such as Miguelanxo Prado), Spanish translations of Japanese manga (such as work of Kia Asamiya, Clamp, Haruhiko Mikimoto, Katsuhiro Otomo, and Masamune Shirow) as well as Spanish translations of American or European comics and graphic novels (including some of the works of Will Eisner, Frank Miller, Dave Gibbons, Enki Bilal, Hugo Pratt, Manu Larcenet, Joann Sfar, Lewis Trondheim.

Origins

In 1981, Norma agency was absorbed the magazines from Riego Ediciones,^[4] this is, "Cimoc" and Hunter", and more later "Cairo", "Sargento Kirk" and "Humor a tope", all directed at 1984 for Joan Navarro.^[4]

With these brands, the company focused on Spanish comics and European comics. Among the first can be highlighted Enrique S. Abulí, Alfonso Azpiri, Beroy, Alfonso Font, Miguelanxo Prado, Segrelles, Daniel Torres or Sento; among the seconds, Enki Bilal, François Bourgeon, Vittorio Giardino, Jean Van Hamme, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Milo Manara, Moebius, Hugo Pratt, Grzegorz Rosinski or Jacques Tardi. Some sagas from these authors was published at collections like Álbumes Cairo, B/N, Cimoc Extra Color, El Muro and Pandora.^[4]

They also edited the theoretical collection Un hombre, mil imágenes (1982–1985).^[4]

New paths

In 90's, Norma Editorial was started to edit works from North American authors, being their most successful the work of Will Eisner, and after that John Byrne, Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, Mike Mignola or Alan Moore in brands like Made in USA.

The company was no stranger to the manga boom at 90's, and they published works of Kia Asamiya, CLAMP, Kosuke Fujishima, Haruhiko Mikimoto, Katsuhiro Otomo, Hiromu Arakawa, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and Masamune Shirow.

In the mid-90s began a close collaboration with the American independent editorial Dark Horse, and late joined their catalog series superheros of DC Comics and collection Vertigo.

Last years

After the loss of the rights of DC in 2005, they started a series of collections like: Made in Hell, for terror comic; Comic Noir, for the political comic; and El día después, for the sci-fi comic. At 2006, they proclaimed the purchase of new superheroes series, like from the ASPEN editorial (with titles like Soulfire or Fathom) and WildStorm (with titles like The Authority or Ex Machina).
