Noel John Tanzer AC (born 16 November 1931) is a retired senior Australian public servant and policymaker.

Background and early life

Noel Tanzer was born on 16 November 1931.[1]

Career

Tanzer began his career in the Commonwealth Public Service in 1949, serving for 17 years in Brisbane.[2]

Tanzer was appointed Secretary of the Department of Veterans' Affairs in 1986.[3]

He moved to the Department of Administrative Services in 1989.[4] His task was to have the department operate in accordance with commercial principles.[5] He restructured 17 separate departmental units into four programs, and offered redundancy packages to downsize the department.[5]

Tanzer retired from the public service in 1993, his final appointment was as Secretary of the Department of the Arts and Administrative Services.[6]

In 1994, Tanzer was appointed as a consultant to the law firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques.[7]

Awards

Tanzer was made a companion of the Order of Australia in 1994.[8]
