Niu Valley Middle School is situated in the heart of Niu Valley, a quiet East Honolulu community in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. The school serves the Hawaiʻi Kai, Kuliʻouʻou, Niu Valley, Wailupe Valley, and ʻĀina Haina areas. Niu Valley Middle is the home of the Lancers. The school colors are red and yellow. The school motto is "Home of the Lancers."
Niu Valley first opened its doors in 1955 with just the seventh grade and a staff of only six members. Since then, it has grown from one building to 15 and now accommodates approximately 900[1] students each year. Up until 1974, the school served 7th to 9th graders, but with the construction of Kaiser High School, all ninth graders were moved to the high school level. In 1989,[2] Niu Valley opened its doors to sixth graders and now serves 6th through 8th grade.
Niu Valley belongs to the Kaiser complex which also includes ʻĀina Haina Elementary, Hahaʻione Elementary, Kaiser High, Kamiloiki Elementary, and Koko Head Elementary. The school was most recently accredited in 2013 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges for a period of six years (until 2019). Also in 2013, under the U.S. Department of Education sanctioned index system Strive HI, Niu Valley received the highest score among public state middle schools.[3]
It was the first public middle school in Hawaiʻi to be authorized to deliver the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
The Friends of Niu Valley provides a parent/community support and advisory role toward Niu Valley Middle School improvement efforts.
