Downshire was born in 1959, the son of Robin Hill. Like his father, he is a Chartered Accountant, and worked in that capacity, and then in corporate finance, for Touche Ross[1] from 1981 to 1987.[2] In 1988, he became the finance director for Scheduling Technology Group (STG),[1][2] and was styled Earl of Hillsborough after his father succeeded as Marquess of Downshire in 1989.

He now holds a number of non-managing directorships and runs the family estate in Yorkshire,[2] which he inherited when he succeeded his father as Marquess of Downshire in 2003. He inherited the title of Baron Sandys from a distant cousin in 2013.
