Newcastle High School is a public school located in Newcastle, Oklahoma. Newcastle is a rapidly growing suburban community. Newcastle was first started as a settlement along the Ozark Trail, which is now called highway 62. The highway is now located along the South Canadian River, the city is named after Newcastle, Texas. The city was first named as South Newcastle in 1962, but then got its currently known name in 1965. The city of Newcastle is home to an array of public works projects that has made the city an educational template for surrounding areas. Through numerous bond issues, Newcastle has constructed a remarkable Early Child Development Center, Performing Arts Center, High School Basketball Arena, and is home to one of the most notable Football Stadiums in the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area.[1] At one point Newcastle High School was known as the Crickets until it was changed to the Racers. Their school colors also included red until it was officially decided that it would be white and blue with black as an unofficial color. The high school enrolls 498 students from grades 9-12 of the Newcastle school system. There is a 96% graduation rate and student teacher ratio of 17.12:1.[2]

[7] Students have the opportunity to take college courses their junior and senior years through Oklahoma City Community College and Redlands Community College. Any junior or senior with the GPA and/or ACT scores can take concurrent. Concurrent is replacement for certain high school courses with college courses. If you take concurrent you get the credit for the high school class and the college class. You can enroll in a number of different colleges in the state of Oklahoma.

Nationally Certified Teachers

Newcastle High School has four Nationally Board Certified Teachers (NBCT). National Board Certification is awarded to accomplished teachers who have gone above and beyond what is expected. Applicants must submit ten assessments to the board, which are reviewed by trained teachers.[9]

Provide opportunities for chapter members in leadership and development. Develop leadership abilities through participation in career and technology education, civic, recreational,and social activities. Promote high standards in ethics, workmanship, and scholarship. Develop the ability of students to plan together, organize, and carry out worthy activities and projects through the use of the democratic process. Create enthusiasm for learning.

- Drama is a new program that started in 2013. Drama is becoming a class in the 2014-2015 school year. The purpose of drama is to help students grow in the art of theater, whether it be an on-stage acting position or a behind the scenes set crew position. Drama has done 1 play so far, The Christmas Princess by Arthur M. Jolly, and are in the process of another. Anyone can join. Meetings are held once a week every Monday after school. When we are in the middle of a play, rehearsals are held 3 times a week on different days starting at 3:15.

Success in the Arts

The school provides fine arts programs like choir and band. These groups have had multiple successful years in contests, earning excellent and superior ratings at district and state contests.

Athletics

The Newcastle Racers compete in many sports organized by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association. The Racers are perennial contenders in many sports, and won the Class 3A State Football Championship in 1992. To be able to participate in any sport at Newcastle, you must hold at or higher than a D minus. You can not be a transfer and play any varsity sport for a year unless you have a hardship.

Bond Overview

To date, the bond projects that have been completed include the new wellness center, field house and concession stand/bathrooms, artificial turf football field, technology and transportation upgrades, bleachers in the middle school gym, and a transportation maintenance facility. The 25,000 square foot, 700-seat auditorium, and the 9,500 square foot library on the Newcastle High School campus is set to be complete for the 2012-2013 school year. The auditorium addition also includes a new vocal music classroom, which currently meets in the band room, and a new drama classroom.
