The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV or DMV) is the department of the New York state government[1] responsible for registering and inspecting automobiles and other motor vehicles and for NYS Enhanced Driver License/Driver's license and Enhanced Non-Driver Photo ID Card/Non-Driver Photo ID Card in the U.S. state of New York.
As of 2008, the NYSDMV has 11,284,546 drivers licenses on file[2] and 10,697,644 vehicle registrations in force.[3]
Its regulations are compiled in title 15 of the New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. The Division of Field Investigations (DFI) is the criminal investigations arm of the DMV. Its investigators/law enforcement officers combat auto theft, identity theft, and fraudulent document related crimes in New York. These investigators are armed New York State peace officers with statewide authority to enforce laws and handle investigations.
