New Year Island (Tasmania)
New Year Island is an island game reserve with an area of 98.22 ha, in south-eastern Australia. It is part of Tasmania’s New Year Island Group which includes the much larger King Island,[1] lying north-west of Tasmania in Bass Strait. The island forms part of the King Island Important Bird Area because of its importance for breeding seabirds and waders.[2]
Fauna
Breeding seabird and shorebird species include short-tailed shearwater, fairy prion, Pacific gull, silver gull and sooty oystercatcher. Reptiles include tiger snake, white's skink, metallic skink and eastern blue-tongued lizard. A species of mouse is present.[3]
