The New Democratic Front (NDF) is a newly formed political party in Sri Lanka. An offshoot of the Democratic United National Front and a constituent partner of the United National Front, the party is led by Shalila Moonesinghe.[1] The symbol of the party is a swan.[2] General Sarath Fonseka, a former Chief of Defence Staff and commander of the Sri Lanka Army, is the party's candidate for the 2010 presidential Elections.[3][4] He is contesting in the elections as the "joint opposition candidate",[5][6] and is supported by the United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the two principal opposition parties, among others.[7] He is therefore one of the two main candidates for the election, along with current President Mahinda Rajapaksa.[8]

On 2 December 2014, Presidential Candidate Maithripala Sirisena has deposited his bond for the upcoming presidential poll to contest under the symbol of the swan from the New Democratic Front.[9] Mr. Sirisena went on to win the election on 8 January 2015, and was sworn in as the new President of Sri Lanka the following day.[10]
