New Century College

New Century College (often abbreviated to as NCC) is an undergraduate college housed within George Mason University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences[1] and is located on the main campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. New Century College was founded in 1995 in response to the Commonwealth of Virginia's call for a "University of the 21st Century."[2] NCC's motto is Connecting the Classroom to the World, which it achieves through its focus on integrative learning. Integrative learning moves beyond the inclusion of experiential learning into academic programs.[3] and involves the linking of learning "...within a major, between fields, between curriculum and co-curriculum or between academic knowledge and practice."[4]

Academic programs

New Century College offers three degree programs and seven minors.[5][6][7] NCC also houses the Cornerstones program, a first-year program consisting of a 24 credit, 4 course sequence.[8]

Cornerstones

Cornerstones is a program for select, incoming first-year students and allows students to complete the majority of their required general education credits. Students follow the Cornerstones sequence of four, writing-intensive, integrative learning communities as a cohort. Completion of each Cornerstones learning community earns 6 credits for a total of 24 credits by the end of the students' first year. Students embark on experiential learning through field trips. Classes are generally of the smaller size of 15 - 20 people allowing in class discussions.[12][13]
