Writing and recording

The word Spain appeared in the song's chorus.[2] As Robin recalls that he wanted a line, 'I declared war on Spain. Robin says, "Instead, Barry wanted something so normal it was ridiculous. He said my words were so unromantic. But what could be more normal than a man in love wanting to declare war on anything that was to him unlovely?".[3]

Unlike the other songs in the album, this song was recorded quickly. Sketches for Odessa has an alternate mono mix from December 7 with a distorted electric guitar part that is not on the multitrack master and a different lead vocal, on this song it features only the guitar and the orchestra.[4] At the beginning of the song, the chord was A. Barry Gibb sings harmony vocals on the line Never say never say never again, Never say never say never again.

The orchestra was arranged by Bill Shepherd, with Barry and Maurice on guitar and Colin on drums.
