Nettie Hartnett Education Center

The first Leavenworth Junior High School was built in 1923 at Third Avenue and Congress. It was the only Junior High in the school district. The building was used for a few years as a 7th Grade Center and then became an elementary school in 1969. It was named Nettie Hartnett School after a school employee who retired upon the completion of 49 years in the Leavenworth School system. Ms.Hartnett began working in the office of the principal at Leavenworth school in September 1911 in the building at 4th and Chestnut and eventually became the register. When Fifth Avenue School closed in 1970 its students attended Nettie Hartnett Elementary. In 2010 Nettie Hartnett Elementary School became Nettie Hartnett Education Center. Nettie Hartnett Education Center serves as the home for the Leavenworth Virtual School, Parents as Teachers Program, an alternative school, and District Special Education administration and itinerant staff.
