Nemanja "Neno" Gudelj (Serbian: Немања Гудељ; born 16 November 1991) is a Serbian footballer who plays as a central midfielder for Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar and the Serbian national team. He is the son of former NAC player Nebojša Gudelj.

Club career

NAC Breda

He signed his first professional contract with NAC in July 2009 but failed to make an official appearance in his debut season despite being named on the bench several times.[1] Gudelj made his competitive debut for NAC Breda in August 2010 in an away match against FC Utrecht.

AZ

2013-14 season

In the summer of 2013 Gudelj transferred to AZ Alkmaar for a fee of around €3 million, sold by his father who was manager at NAC, signing a 4-year contract.[2] Gudelj featured prominently for AZ in the League, Cup and Europa League but, in his first official AZ game lost the chance of winning his first major honour; losing to Ajax in the Johan Cruijff Schaal (Dutch Super Cup). In the league Gudelj had perhaps his best season by scoring 5 goals and assisting a further 3 goals in only 29 matches. In the cup Gudelj assisted 2 goals in the competition en-route to the semi-final including one in extra-time against SC Heerenveen, later the game would go to penalties and Gudelj would have his saved but AZ would progress 9-8 on penalties.

In the 2013-14 Europa League, Gudelj featured in all but 9 minutes as AZ went to the semi-finals, scoring once and assisting 3 goals; including 2 crucial assists which lead to the only goals in matches against Czech side Slovan Liberec. Also in this competition Gudelj would be made captain of the AZ side for the first time in a group game against Greek side PAOK.

2014-15 season

Despite reported interest from Portuguese giants Porto[3] Gudelj was named as captain by manager Marco van Basten for the forthcoming season. After manager Marco van Basten stopped with his job in Alkmaar, the new coach John van den Brom also chose Gudelj as captain.

International career

After being capped at the U19 and U21 levels, Gudelj earned his first cap for Serbia on 5 March 2014, in a 2–1 away win over Ireland in a friendly match after coming on as a last minute substitute for Antonio Rukavina.[4] In 2014, Gudelj played for the national team a further four times, playing against Jamaica twice, Panama and Brazil.

In July 2014 his former coach at AZ, Dick Advocaat, was named as Serbia's national team manager for the Euro 2016 campaign.[5] He scored his first goal on 18 November 2014 in a 2–0 away friendly win against Greece.
