Neitersen is a municipality in the district of Altenkirchen, in Rhineland-Palatinate, in western Germany.

Geography

Neitersen is 4 miles southwest of Altenkirchen on the river Wied. The village divides in the districts Neiterschen, Niederölfen, Kahlhardt, Fladersbach and Neitersen. Neitersen is 700 feet above sealevel.

History

In a contract from March 1, 1262 between Gräfin Mechthild, the widow of Earl Heinrich III. von Sayn, and the archbishop from Cologne, are three attendants from Nithirshusen listed who are serving for their whole lifetime in the house of Gräfin Mechthild. The original Version of this contract is stored in Landeshauptarchiv Koblenz. This is the first known historical document in which Neitersen is mentioned.

In the 18th century, ownership of the local forest changed from the Earl Graf von Sayn-Hachenburg, to the local residents in Neitersen.

1848 the famous mayor from Weyerbusch Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen founded the first school in Neitersen. The building still exists.

In 1882 the railroad construction Siershahn-Altenkirchen started. On May, 30th 1884 it started its public transportation service and Neitersen got a Station and a Postoffice with its first public telephone at the same day.

Until 1908 there was a mine for iron ore in duty, its name was Emma.

First powerline got established in November 1918 from the local mill into their neighbourhood.

After 100 years of service the railway company stopped all passenger transportation in 1984.

Council

Council of Neitersen has 12 elected members and the local Mayor as its chairman.

Economy and Infrastructur

Highway 256 (Bundesstraße 256) and a cargo railroad powered by Westerwaldbahn do touch base Neitersen. There are three larger industrial companies in the village and one prizewinning movie theater, operated as Programmkino with the Name Wied-Scala.
