The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) is a mountaineering school in Uttarkashi, India, established on 14 November 1965.

History
The proposal to have a mountaineering Institute at Uttarkashi was mooted by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1964. Uttarkashi was selected primarily because of its proximity to the Gangotri region in western Garhwal, noted for its climbing terrain.
The school opened in 1965 at the Provincial Armed Constabulary Campus at Gyansu, on the north bank of the river Bhagirathi. The present location, about 5 km away across the Bhagirathi River, was selected in 1970 by a team comprising Harish Sarin (then Secretary), M.S. Kohli, and architect Rahman. The school moved to its present location at 4300 AMSL in the Ladari Reserve Forest in 1974. Located across the east bank of the river Bhagirathi, the school overlooks Uttarkashi and the confluence of Indravati with the Bhagirathi. In November 2001, the Chief Minister of the new state of Uttarakhand became vice president of the school.
The school has received patronage from the Government of India and the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand states. The school has also received support from Y. B. Chauhan, former Defence Minister of India and founding president of the school, and Sucheta Kriplani, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and founding vice president of the school. The first principal of the school was Gyan Singh, and the first secretary was H. C. Sarin, who served for 22 years.
