National Union of Students Wales (Welsh: Undeb Cenedlaethol y Myfyrwyr Cymru) is the Welsh section of the National Union of Students of the United Kingdom.[1] NUS Wales was established in 1973 and is the largest democratic organisation in Wales, representing over a quarter of a million students from both the Higher and Further Education sectors. NUS Wales is an open organisation that works in partnership with students’ unions in Wales. Local and national governments, the media, industry, trade unions, pressure groups and voluntary organisations all recognise and respect NUS Wales as the collective voice of students in Wales. NUS Wales is an autonomous 'special region' of NUS UK, setting its own policy, electing its own executive committee, and campaigning on the issues that affect students studying in Wales. NUS Wales officers and activists are supported by staff based in Cardiff Bay.
Founding of NUS Wales
The first autonomous NUS Wales Conference was held in Aberystwyth on the 3–4 November 1973 under the title “National Welsh Colleges Conference”. The conference was a mixture of briefings, workshops and policy discussion. Delegates agreed to draft a new constitution establishing a greater level of autonomy to be presented to NUS Conference in 1974.
The last meeting of what had been the Welsh Region of NUS took place in October 1973.
