National Leasing provides equipment leasing services to Canadian businesses in a variety of sectors. The company offers a third option to cash and bank financing for equipment purchases and is the largest Canadian lessor in small to mid-size transactions.[1] National Leasing is headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

History
1973-1975 Robert M. Chipman hires Nick Logan and Tom Pundyk to explore the equipment leasing market in Manitoba.
1977 National Vehicle Leasing, a division of the Megill Stephenson Company Ltd. and one that would eventually establish National Equipment Leasing, enters into its first equipment lease when the company leases a Codaphone phone call recorder, documenting the lease on loose-leaf paper.
1982 National Vehicle Leasing introduces its electronic Lease Management System (LMS).
1983 National Vehicle Leasing moves from Erin Street to 276 Colony Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
1984 National Equipment Leasing becomes a separate division of Megill Stephenson Company Ltd. and expands its services outside Winnipeg, to Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver, Canada.
1986 National Equipment Leasing Ltd. is incorporated under The Corporations Act of Manitoba and expands its operations and opens a branch office in Ontario.
1990 Despite the early 1990s recession, National Equipment Leasing expands opens branch offices in Quebec and Saskatchewan.
1991 National Equipment Leasing writes 10,000 leases for a total net investment in leases of $19 million CAD.
1992 The company increases staff to 57 employees. It also adds insurance services and an employee profit-sharing plan.
1993 National Equipment Leasing implements personal computers and creates a broker division to stimulate growth in Eastern Canada. The company’s lease portfolio increases to over 12,000 leases for a total net investment in leases of $37 million CAD.
1994 Deloitte Touche LLP and the National Post recognize National Equipment Leasing as one of the 50 Best Managed Private Companies in Canada, an award the company wins for the next 16 years. National Equipment Leasing starts leasing agriculture equipment, further develops broker relationships and increases its staff to 75 employees.
1995 National Equipment Leasing Ltd. changes its name to National Leasing Group Inc. The company expands operations to Nova Scotia and increases its staff to 80 employees.
1996 National Leasing begins use of Internet and email. The company centralizes its administration services in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, closing out-of-province offices and improving administrative efficiency. Employees outside Manitoba can now work from home.
1997 National Leasing expands operations to New Brunswick and increases staff to 99 employees.
1998 National Leasing enters into an agency agreement with First Affinity Capital Corp. in Ontario and expands its operations to Newfoundland and Labrador. The company launches its website and proprietary FastCredit® automated credit adjudication system, which is recognized by Microsoft as one of the year’s “Best Software Solutions.” National Leasing moves into a new office at 1558 Willson Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and increases its staff to 149 employees.
1999 National Leasing creates its Marketing Department. The increasing staff, now at 166, helps the company write over 34,000 leases for a total net investment in leases of over $200 million CAD.
2001 National Leasing’s IT department launches FastCredit® 2.0 and Customer Service On-line. The company also creates its Risk Management Department and increases its staff to 175 employees.
2002 National Leasing introduces its stylized N logo and writes over 45,000 leases for a total net investment in leases of over $300 million CAD.
2003 National Leasing invests with True North Entertainment to help fund the construction of Winnipeg’s new downtown arena (now the MTS Centre). The Equipment Leasing Association awards National Leasing with the Business Technology Solutions Award for the development of its Securitization Administration System. National Leasing adds veterinary equipment under its medical program leasing.
2004 National Leasing introduces its Golf and Turf leasing program, and its total net investment in leases increases to $350 CAD million and increases its staff to 189 employees.
2005 National Leasing acquires Toronto-based Vernon Rentals & Leasing Inc. and First Affinity Capital Corp. The company also establishes its health committee, builds an on-site gym and creates Café National at head office in Winnipeg.
2006 National Leasing begins lease administration services for RBC Leasing. National Leasing expands operations to Prince Edward Island and increases its staff to 267 employees.
2007 National Leasing donates $500,000 to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the company’s largest one-time corporate donation. Manitoba Business Magazine recognizes National Leasing as one of Manitoba’s 50 Fastest Growing Companies. The company’s total net investment in leases increases to over $500 million CAD.
2008 Aon Hewitt recognizes National Leasing as one of the 50 Best Small and Medium Employers in Canada, recognition the company has earned every year (as of 2014).
2009 National Leasing staff members contribute to an internal on-line forum and provide recommendations for the company’s new head office. Most recommendations, including a bigger gym and fitness area, reading and quiet rooms, and two lunch rooms, are incorporated when the company moves its head office to 1525 Buffalo Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The building, which was renovated from an old factory, earns National Leasing several Maclean’s Magazine "The Green 30" awards as one of Canada’s top eco-friendly employers.
2010 National Leasing Group Inc. is acquired by Canadian Western Bank to expand the leasing company’s leasing capabilities. Waterstone Human Capital awards National Leasing with the 10 Most Admired Cultures Award.
2012 National Leasing launches its new website with its current Phil animation branding. The United Way of Winnipeg recognizes National Leasing with the Campaign Chair Award for outstanding community commitment for the third time.
2013 National Leasing acquires MapleLease Financial Services Ltd. and the company’s total net investment in leases increases to over $1 billion CAD.
Community involvement and sponsorship
National Leasing donates one per cent of its pre-tax profits to Winnipeg-based charities and non-profit organizations.[2] Annually, the company organizes a campaign in support of the United Way, [3] and the leasing company also allocates money to its more than 50 Account Managers across Canada to spend on various local causes.
National Leasing’s donation philosophy is structured primarily to support community development, education and health research and promotion. Community development donations support at-risk youth, attainable housing provisions and the promotion of arts and culture locally and nationally. Education donations support the encouragement and advancement of financial literacy, access to post-secondary education for at-risk youth, and curriculum development for business-related educational programs. Health research and promotion support children and youth-focused disease management health research and encouragement of recreation and physical activity for all ages.
Company culture
National Leasing’s corporate culture has won the company several workplace awards. In 2012, Waterstone Human Capital recognized National Leasing as one of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures,[4] and Achievers recognized the company as one of Canada’s 50 Most Engaged Workplaces.[5] in 2014, National Leasing earned recognition as one of Canada’s best small and medium employers, an award Aon Hewitt has awarded the company for the last seven years.[6] The same year, Aon Hewitt recognized the company for its energy efficient head office and paperless electronic document management system with the Green 30 Award, marking National Leasing as the only Manitoba-based office to make the list.
