The National Institute of Design R&D Campus (राष्ट्रीय डिज़ाइन संस्थान) better known as NID - Bangalore Campus is a design institute located in Bengaluru, in Karnataka. The R&D campus specializes in Research and Development activities related to design and is one of the three campuses that is part of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. NID is recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research under Ministry of Science and Technology, government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation.

The campus currently offers three post graduate design courses; two IT related and one Retail related.

Business Week has placed NID in its list of top design schools[1] in the world.

History

The Bangalore office of NID was initially located at Rajaji Nagar and functioned as an interface to coordinate projects between the main institute at Ahmedabad and the technology industry which is centred on Bangalore.

A campus was later planned to be built at Yeshwantpur, a suburb in northwest Bangalore. The new campus was built at a cost of 7.5 crores and was officially inaugurated on 31 March 2006 by Dr Darlie O'Koshy, who was the executive director of NID at the time.[2]

The campus is located 3 km from Yeshwantpur railway station on the arterial Tumkur Road (National Highway 4 (India)) that connects Bangalore and Mumbai. The campus is in proximity to two other Central Government Institutes, Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) and Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute (IPIRTI), and is 5 km away from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) along the same road.

The Campus can be accessed by public transport buses operated by the BMTC from the junction of Outer Ring Road and Tumkur Road at Gorguntepalya or Peenya on Tumkur Road (See Map). The campus will also be accessible from the proposed Bangalore Metro station on Tumkur Road.

Courses

At present, the 3 post graduate courses offered at the NID Research and Development campus are Information and Interface design (IID), Design for Digital experience (DDE) and Design for Retail experience (DRE). From the year 2014, two courses have been restructured from Information and Interface design (IID) to Information Design (ID), and Design for Digital experience (DDE) to Interaction Design (IxD).[3]

Dfrost

Dfrost is the annual design and culture festival of NID, Bangalore. It is a two-day-long event held towards the end of every year. Dfrost includes events and workshops related to design.[4]
