Colloquially, NCCU is known by the Chinese as "National University of Governance, " "Zhèngdà" (政大). The name, Chengchi (政治) refers to governance. The school was founded by the Kuomintang-dominated Nationalist government of Nanjing in 1927 as an incubator for senior civil service in China. History
- 1927, Central School of Party Affairs in Nanjing (“Party” refers to the Kuomintang)
- 1929, Central School of Political Affairs in Chongqing and later to Nanjing
- 1946, National Chengchi University (National University of Governance) in Nanjing
The school was established in 1927 in Nanjing as the Nationalist government's Central School of Party Affairs. In 1929, it was renamed to Central School of Political Affairs, after the "Northern Expedition" victory of the Nationalists in mainland China. In 1946, Central School of Political Affairs emerged with the Central School of Cadre in Chongqing, and the National Chengchi University (National University of Governance) was formally founded in Nanjing, signifying the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War. When the Nationalist government lost control of mainland China in 1949, the university's activities were suspended.
The university was relocated to Taiwan in 1954 by the Executive Yuan in order to meet the senior civil service need and to meet the growing demands of higher education in post-war Taiwan. Initially only graduates students were admitted, but later in 1955, undergraduate students began to be admitted. In 1960, the university awarded the first Doctor of Juridical Science degree in Taiwan under the provisions of the Degree Conferral Law. In 1964, the school initiated the first Chinese MBA program.
Today, the school is one of the top universities in the Taiwan, and it also has been elected as the "Aim for the Top University Project" sponsored school of the Ministry of Education.
