Nate Scott Thompson (born October 5, 1984) is an American ice hockey player, currently playing for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League.
Playing career
Juniors
Thompson was drafted in the 6th round, 183rd overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. Thompson was a product of the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League and made his professional debut with the Providence Bruins in the play-offs of the 2004–05 season.
Boston Bruins
Thompson signed an entry level contract with the Bruins on July 20, 2005 and made his debut in the NHL with the Boston Bruins in 2006–07 playing four games.
New York Islanders
Just before the start of the 2008–09 season on October 8, 2008, Thompson was claimed off waivers by the New York Islanders.[1] Thompson scored his first NHL goal against Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers on November 4, 2008.[2]
On July 27, 2009, Thompson was re-signed to a one-year contract with the Islanders.[3]
Tampa Bay Lightning
After posting 6 points in 39 games with the Islanders in the 2009–10, Thompson was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning on January 21, 2010.[4] On July 10, 2010, the Tampa Bay Lightning re-signed Thompson to a one year contract. Thompson appeared in 32 games with the Lightning last season after being claimed off of waivers from the New York Islanders. Thompson had one goal and four points. Thompson excelled in the face off circle for the Lightning, winning 219 of 385 draws taken (56.9 percent). Thompson set career highs this season with eight assists, points with 10 and tied a career high with two goals.[5]
On January 31, 2011, the Tampa Bay Lightning announced the signing of Nate Thompson to a two year contract extension. Thompson had played in 51 games with the Lightning this season, recording career-highs for goals with seven, assists with 10 and points with 17. Thompson continued his success in the face-off circle, winning 249 of 446 draws taken (55.8 percent). Thomson ranks seventh among NHL forwards with 49 blocked shots and also is fourth on the team with 25 takeaways.[6]
During the 2012-13 NHL lockout, Thompson played for his hometown Alaska Aces of the ECHL and returned to Tampa Bay at the end of the lockout.[7]
On March 3, 2013, the Tampa Bay Lightning announced signing Thompson to a four-year contract extension. Thomson skated in 30 games this season with the Lightning, posting six goals and 10 points to go along with six penalty minutes. Thompson ranks second on the team in hits with 58, and is third in face-off percentage (50.6 percent).[8]
Anaheim Ducks
On June 29, 2014, Thompson was traded by Tampa Bay to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for two picks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.[9]
