Natashya Gutierrez, sometimes known as Ashley Gutierrez, is a Philippine journalist[1][2][3] best known for her work as a multimedia reporter for internet news organization Rappler.[4][5]

Gutierrez is also the co-founder of Leap Philippine Internships, a program which provides opportunities for US based college students to intern in the Philippines.[6]

Early Life and Education

The middle child of businessman Francis Gutierrez and the former Tina Lazcanotegui,[7] Gutierrez received her elementary education from St. Pedro Poveda College. She then received a scholarship to go to International School Manila (ISM), graduating in 2006[8] with the school formally recognizing her as that year's "Most Outstanding Student".[7] Partly on the basis of her performance at ISM, Yale University offered Gutierrez a full tuition scholarship,[7] which she accepted, and then took up a degree in psychology.[2]Gutierrez graduated cum laude from Yale University in 2010.[2]

As a Yale Journalism Scholar, Gutierrez worked with various publications, was a reporter for the undergraduate-run monthly television newsmagazine YTV News,[9] and was co-editor-in-chief of the Yale Journal of Human Rights.[2] It was her exposure to journalism in college which first piqued her interest in doing journalism at a more professional level.

Rappler

After graduation, Gutierrez first took up a job with a digital marketing firm in New York City and then moved to Dallas to work for a public relations firm. A trip back to the Philippines put her in contact with journalist Maria Ressa, who invited her to become a reporter for Rappler, where she now regularly anchors the daily Rappler Newscast.

Stories in which Gutierrez' coverage have played a significant role include the 2013 Serendra explosion,[3] in which her coverage raised questions about whether the gas responsible for the explosion had been odorless and may thus have made residents unable to detect the leak; and the Priority Development Assistance Fund scam .[4][5]

In August 2013, The latter coverage resulted in Janet Lim-Napoles filing a libel case against Gutierrez, a number of other journalists, and a blogger who had posted pictures allegedly of Napoles' daughter, depicting a supposedly lavish lifestyle.[4][5]
