Natalie Di Luccio (born on 29 June 1989) is a multilingual singer from Toronto, Canada. In 2010, she began releasing music videos on YouTube of Bollywood film songs, which garnered millions of views and lead to her worldwide recognition. Di Luccio became very popular and was invited to India to perform with composer Amit Trivedi[1] as well as on Coke Studio (India) on MTV India.[2] She started her professional career in Bollywood with notable playback singer Sonu Nigam and has been a singer for various feature film soundtracks (English Vinglish, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, Chennai Express).[1] In April, 2013, Di Luccio began working with legendary Italian music producer Mauro Malavasi (Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti) in Bologna, Italy.[3]

Early life

Natalie Di Luccio was born on 29 June 1989 in Toronto, Ontario, and trained to be a Classical singer. Her father is from Agropoli, Italy and mother from Montreal, Canada.[4] She was a student at Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts. She went to McGill University to study Western Classical Voice and pursue a career in music.[3]

Career

As a teenager, Di Luccio was frequently selected to perform the national anthems at Toronto Blue Jays games at the Rogers Centre in Toronto and also did the same for other sporting events at the time including the first ever NFL game at Rogers Centre on August 14, 2008. [5]

Di Luccio's link with Bollywood started when she received a message over Myspace to record a small part in Sonu Nigam's devotional album, Maha Ganesha in 2009.[3] She later went on to record a Michael Jackson tribute song with Sonu Nigam.[1] Di Luccio shot to fame when she recorded and released on YouTube, her version of a popular Bollywood song, "Tu Jaane Na". This music video reached over 1 million views and brought her instant fame.[1]

Di Luccio first set foot in the mainstream arena when she recorded the songs "Moments in Life" for the film Chalo Dilli and "Aadha Ishq" with Shreya Ghoshal for Band Baaja Baraat.[1]

In the summer of 2011, she was asked to be on the 5th season of Indian reality TV show Bigg Boss but rejected it to focus on her music.[6]

Di Luccio performed "Pee Loon" at the 2011 New Talent Awards which broadcast on Colors on October 16, 2011.[7]

Di Luccio performed with music Maestro A R Rahman at his live concerts in Bangalore, Nagpur, Mumbai and Dubai in 2011-2012.[1] She also sang on the background score for the film Kadal which was composed by Rahman.[8]

On July 21, 2012, she performed with Amit Trivedi and Shriram Iyer the song "Bari Bari" produced by Amit Trivedi, in Coke Studio (India), Season 2 broadcast on MTV India and DD National (National Channel of India).[2]

In 2013, Di Luccio worked with Italian music producer Mauro Malavasi (Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti). Di Luccio spent time in Bologna connecting with her roots and recording new material with Malavasi.[9]

In 2013, Di Luccio sang on the soundtrack for the Bollywood film Chennai Express[10] which became one of the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time.[11]

Di Luccio sang for the launches of many brands in India, including Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche Panamera, Samsung Galaxy S4 in 2013.[12][13]

In September 2013, Di Luccio sang a Gujarati song called "Prarthana". This was the first time a western classical piece had been sung in this language.[14]

On October 4, 2013, Di Luccio sang at the Watch World Awards in Delhi, India.[13]

In 2014, Di Luccio made her Tamil film debut on the A R Rahman composed song "Aila Aila" for I directed by Shankar. She performed the song live at the televised audio launch in Chennai on September 15, 2014. The launch was witnessed by honorary guests Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rajnikanth. [15] The song, a hybrid of different music genres with an emphasis on Di Luccio's operatic vocals, is rumored to have significance in the upcoming film with stunning visuals. This was the first time opera had been used in a major Indian film as well as in the Tamil language. Initially, the reviews for the song have been mixed but overall positive to Rahman's experimentation. Di Luccio had much difficulty learning and pronouncing Tamil in a short time period and composer A R Rahman has stated that this was one of the most difficult songs he has worked on in his entire career.
