Nandeeswarar Temple

Nandeeswarar Temple is located in Adambakkam (off Karuneegar Street) in Chennai. It is closest to St. Thomas Mount suburban railway station. The temple has two entrances one in the east, and another in the south. There is a tank situated outside the southern entrance, though not in use.

Sri Nandeeswarar Temple is an ancient temple (fondly called as Sivan temple by local people) located in Chennai near St. Thomas Mount (Adambakkam).This temple exists from ancient period approx 1000+ years. The main deity is Sri Nandheeswarar and Goddess is Sri Aavudai Nayagi (Gomathi in Sanskrit). Legend says that, there lived a Rishi called 'Bringi Munivar' in the nearby hill and was performing penance worshipping Lord Shiva. As 'Bringi' Rishi was residing, the hill was called as 'Bringi Malai' which is today's 'Parangi Malai' or 'St. Thomas Mount'.

Pleased by Bringi Rishi's worship, Lord Shiva gave dharshan to him in the form of Nandhi in this holy place and hence the God here is known as Nandheeswarar. During later days, a Chola king called "Aadhani Cholan" who was ruling this part of the land constructed this temple. As this territory was part of his then kingdom, this place was known as "Aadhanippakkam" which turned to be today's "Aadhambakkam". Also it is said that Bringi Rishi kept his pitcher [in Tamil, Kindi{Kamandalam, like Jug}] at a certain place during prayers. Over time, this place, Kindy came to be known as 'GUINDY'

Located very close to St. Thomas Mount Railway Station, this ancient, yet small and beautiful temple has a very holy ambience with ancient architecture and sculptures. While going through this place, Kanchi Maha Periyaval found this temple and asked the people to conduct regular pujas. The special feature of this temple is that on all Pradosham days a cow goes round the sanctum.

Deities

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of the temple is in the form of Nandi standing in front of his devotee Sage Birungi. It is one of the oldest temple in Chennai. ( 950 years old temple)

The temple houses separate worship places for Vinayaka, Nagadevathai, Vishnu, Subramanyar, Bairavar, Brahma, Durga, Sandikeswarar and Navagrahas. The idol of Nandeeswarar (Siva lingam) faces east and the Goddess Avudainayagi faces south.

Special Poojas

Special poojas are conducted on days like Pradhosham, Shivratri, Somawar (Mondays). Arudra darshan is yet another famous religious event here.

Also other special pujas are conducted on days significant to Lord Subramanya and Lord Ganesha.

People who want to get marry soon can give two rose garland to this temple for five Pradhosham.

History

This is an ancient temple built by the Chola King, Aadhani (So the name Aadambakkam. Note: Also bcas of d Sage Bringi, BringiMalai, now called as ParangiMalai and who kept his pitcher [in Tamil, Kindi{Kamandalam, like Jug}] at a certain place during prayers. Over time, this place, Kindy came to be known as 'GUINDY') and has carvings on the pillars of the temple include the images of Kannapanayanar, Kamadhenu, Maruthi, Narasimha and Vinayaka. The temple history, slogas and Thiruppavai are printed on the walls of the temple.

Vilvam tree is the stala viruksham of this temple.

The special feature of this temple is that on all Pradosham days a cow goes round the sanctum.

The temple has undergone lot of improvement in the past 3 decades.
