Nagarukhra(Bengali: নগরউখড়া) is a town in Kalyani subdivision of Nadia District in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Nagarukhra is located in the UTC 5.30 time zone and it follows Indian standard time(IST).Nagarukhra has two zonal area.(Nagarukhra-1 & Nagarukhra-2).Nagarukhra is situated between end part of Nadia District & the starting area of North 24 Parganas

History

Nagarukhra, located in Nadia district in the state of West Bengal, is a relatively young town. During the Bangladesh Freedom War(Freedom from West Pakistan), Nagarukhra, was the site of an Indian Army Basement, formed of Small villages in the district of Nadia.Formerly this place was known as Ukrah(Mouza) Village.Later it was named Nagarukhra.

Geography

Nagarukhra is located at 22°56′28″N 88°38′07″E / 22.941069096086096°N 88.63515827804804°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 12 metres (39 feet).

Nagarukhra is one of the area, where ground water is affected by arsenic contamination.[2]

Climate

Festival

Durga Puja is the main festival of Nagarukhra. Durga puja is largely celebrated. During durga puja the streets are only available for people who come to see the puja and for emergency services like police,paramedics,ambulance and fire depth. Some other important festivals are Kali Puja,Biswakarma Puja,Laxmi Puja,Rathyatra etc.

River

The Jamuna River (West Bengal) flows past North-East side of Nagarukhra. A P.W.D Bridge connects the two side as well as other areas with the town.Jamuna is the part of River Hooghly.In recent years the polluted caused by draining of garbage.Now a days Jamuna is among one of the polluted rivers in Nadia .

Demographics

As of 2001 India census Nagarukhra had a population of 18,869. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Nagarukhra has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 55% of the males and 45% of females literate. 10% of the population is under 6–8 years of age.

Private companies like Airtel, Aircel Vodafone India Idea Cellular Reliance, Tata Docomo, Idea etc. dominate the mobile world. 3G coverage is yet not fully available here, though BSNL 3G, Reliance 3G, Airtel 3G, Vodafone 3G & Idea 3G are partly available in some parts of the region. People here, are also active on social sites like twitter facebook Orkut etc.
