Nadeem–Shravan (sometimes credited as Nadeem Shravan) are a music director duo in the Bollywood film industry of India. The duo derives its name from the first names of its two principals, Nadeem Saifi and Shravan Rathod.
Nadeem–Shravan were among the most successful music directors of the 1990s till the early 2000s. They have the strong effect of Ancient Hindustani Music in their compositions and were the only composers during the 1990s and 2000s who always used to use a little or more the three instruments like Bansuri (Indian flute), Sitar & Shehnai (Persian flute) in almost all of their songs. The usage of these instruments explored these instruments in a modern and impressive way without disconnecting from its original value. It made their contribution very unique compared to the contribution of some magnicifent rising Music Directors towards the evolution of new and different music era started in early 90's. Most commonly used singers are Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, Anuradha Paudwal, Alka Yagnik, Babul Supriyo and other Hindi playback singers like SP Balasubramanyam, Pankaj Udhas, Shailendra Singh, Shabbir Kumar, Nitin Mukesh, Hariharan, Sonu Nigam, Vinod Rathod, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sadhana Sargam, Manhar Udhas, Suresh Wadkar, Mohammad Aziz, Roop Kumar Rathod, Sudesh Bhosle, Bali Brahmbhatt, Shaan, Jolly Mukherjee, Jaspinder Narula, Sapna Mukherjee, Gurdas Maan, Tauseef Akhtar, Anwar, Vipin Sachdeva, Debashish Dasgupta, Babla Maheta, Mukul Agarwal and many others have sung under their baton. Veteran singer Mohd. Rafi also sang for them in their film Dangal. Evergreen singers Lata Mangeshkar & Asha Bhonsle also sang in few albums for the duo.
They composed soundtracks for many films, including Aashiqui (1990), Saajan (1991), Deewana (1992), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), Dilwale (1994), Raja (1995), Barsaat (1995), Agni Sakshi (1996), Jeet (1996), Raja Hindustani (1996), Pardes (1997), Sirf Tum (1999), Dhadkan (2000), Kasoor (2001), Hum Ho Gaye Aapke (2001), Raaz (2002), Dil Hai Tumhaara (2002), Dil Ka Rishta (2003), Andaaz (2003), Tumsa Nahi Dekha (2004), Bewafaa (2005) and many others. Their music for Raaz was even appreciated by Sir Paul McCartney.[1]
Music career
The association of Nadeem Saifi and Shravan dates back to 1972 when they met each other at a function. Their first film assignment was Dangal, a Bhojpuri movie in 1979. Their first Hindi movie assignment was Maine Jeena Seekh Liya in 1981 sung by Amit kumar . They got three big films; IlaakaAmit Kumar & Asha, Hisaab Khoon Ka1 song sung By Amit Kumar and Lashkar. In 1985, the duo composed music for a commercial project called Star Ten. Ten Hindi actors (Mithun, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Sachin, Danny, Vijendra, Sulakshana Pandit, etc.) sang some songs with lyrics by Anwar Saagar.[2]
Rise to fame
Aashiqui (1990) brought Nadeem Ashfaq–Shravan into the limelight. Music mogul Gulshan Kumar gave them the break and the film saw the emergence of three superstars – Nadeem,Ashfaq Shravan and Kumar Sanu. Some hits include "Ek Sanam Chahiye", "Nazar Ke Samane", "Dheere Dheere Se", "Ab Tere Bin Jee Lenge Hum" and "Jaanejigar Jaaneman". Aashiqui ranks in the lot of the few films that have had a hit in each song. The joy ride continued with Saajan, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, Sadak, Sainik, Raja, Dilwale, Raja Hindustani and Phool Aur Kaante. Whether it was "Chehra Kya Dekhte Ho" (Salaami), "Adayein Bhi Hain" (Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin) "Sochenge Tumhe Pyar" (Deewana), "Aaj Raat Chandni Hai" (Kal Ki Awaz), they all had the distinct stamp of Nadeem Shravan.
They have composed all kinds of music, be it fast-track, sentimental or dance numbers. But their forte was always melody. Most of their compositions were inspired from old time ghazals, westerns and other charts.
When Pardes soundtrack was released, the tracks had different varieties of songs; songs ("I Love My India" and "Meri Mehbooba"), love songs ("Do Dil Mil Rahe Hain") and qawwali ("Nahin Hona Tha)" pop ("My first day in America"), pain ("Ye Dil Deewana"). Planet Bollywood started the review by saying, "The music for Pardes is Nadeem-Shravan's best ever."[3]
They have worked with lyricists like Anand Bakshi, Faaiz Anwar, Hasrat Jaipuri, Rani Malik and many others. When they arrived on the music scene, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Anand Milind were at the top. But subsequently their hard worked paid and they gave various hits in a row.[2]
Their songs often contain Jhankaar, Conga, Bongos, Electronic drum fusion beats. They have insisted on sticking to lyricist Sameer and male singers Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan and female singer Alka Yagnik for most of their compositions.
Aashiqui has been rated the 4th best soundtrack ever by Planet Bollywood on their "100 Greatest Bollywood Soundtracks".[4] Others soundtrack by them include Saajan (16), Sadak (51), Raja Hindustani (56), Dhadkan (73), Deewana (79).
Gulshan Kumar murder case
In 1997, the duo ran into negative publicity when Nadeem, while on vacation in London, England, was named a suspect in the murder of his former mentor, record executive Gulshan Kumar (the boss of T-Series Music Company). In India, by the investigating police and arrest warrants were issued against him. Mumbai police claimed [5] he paid a hitman for carrying out this task. His passport was revoked, and to avoid arrest, he stayed in England. The House of Lords upheld the London High Court's decision against the extradition in the 1997 murder case, and turned down the Indian government's plea for review of the decision. "In the findings given by the UK court which were confirmed by the House of Lords, Nadeem Saifi was not only declared innocent, he was also a victim of conspiracy falsely involved in a serious charge of conspiring to kill Gulshan Kumar.[6][7] In mid-2002, Nadeem Saifi was acquitted of any involvement in the Gulshan Kumar murder case by a court in the Indian city of Mumbai. The judge said there was inadequate evidence to prove the charges.[8]
After being inactive for sometime, Nadeem–Shravan made a comeback of sorts with films like Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa, Ek Rishta, Kasoor, Hum Ho Gaye Aapke, Raaz, Dil Hai Tumhaara, Qayamat, Hungama, Andaaz, Bewafaa, Tumsa Nahi Dekha, Barsaat, Dosti and Do Knot Disturb.
Nadeem remained in the UK and despite the distance between England and India, he and Shravan continued to make music together. But they later split after Dosti.[9]
Split
In 2005, the duo split. Dosti was their last movie together. Nadeem started his own perfume and bag company, also involved in solo compositions. Shravan was uninterested in continuing with his music, and instead focussed on his son's music careers and movie production. Another reason cited is probably the distance between the two. In an interview, Nadeem stated that there is not any conflict between him and Shravan. In late 2013 it was announced that the duo would work together again on the sequel of Deewana but the later split due to personal conflicts again as a result Nadeem Saifee has decided to return as a solo composer for Ishq Forever in 2015.

Comeback in 2015
Nadeem Saifee has clarified that he will be making his comeback with lyricist Sameer in a new film titled "Ishq Forever". He has spilt with his partner Shravan and will be making his comeback as a solo composer. The film has six songs and he hopes to recreate his era through his music. They also have other projects in hand like Deewana 2, Saajan 2 & Vishesh Films Next.
