Myanglung (Nepali: म्याङलुङ) is a municipality and district headquarters of Terhathum District of Kosi Zone in eastern Nepal. The municipality is situated at an elevation of about 1500 metres above sea level.[1] Myanglung was converted into a municipality from village development committee on 18 May 2014, merging the existing Myanglung, Piple, Jirikhimti, Ambung, Sabla and Tamphula village development committees.[2][3] According to the census of (BS.2068) the total population of Myanglung is 19,659 including five VDCs.[4]

People

A mixed settlement is found however Limbus and Newars are the major inhabitants of this region. People have their own mother languages and culture. The National language is often commonly spoken and understood. Newars are regarded as ethnic or indigenous people, however their numbers are found less in the recent observation while comparing to other castes. This can be due to the immigration of people from different areas of districts to be settled in Myanglung.

History

The Myanglung, along with the Tehrathum, was annexed to the unified Nepal by Prince Bahadur Shah in 1780s. Earlier it was a province of Pallo Kiraat. A story behind the naming of the place is popularly recited in the area. There was a chautari under a big tree (वरको रूख). Two porters who had stopped on the chautari were amazed when their cooking pot fell down from the fireplace after an unusual shaking. That made Myang lung sound which they gave to the place as a good name. A temple is standing there by carrying a history of the ancient chautari. In limbu's language, Myang means Cat & Lung means stone. Myanglun was formed by the two Limbu language words.

Academic Agencies

Singha Bahini Higher Secondary School, Saraswoti Secondary school are the community schools whereas two couples of boarding schools have been running by private sector.

For higher education Myanglung campus and Terathum Campus (popularly known as Chuhandada Campus) are prominent academies.

Media

Myanglung has two community radio stations: Radio Menchhayayem - 102.6 MHz and Radio Terhathum - 92.4 MHz to promote local culture and language.

Commercial Centres

For the economic activities of the entire district, there are governmental and non governmental banks such as Nepal Bank and some private banks e.g. Narayani bank limited, State bank of India, Sanima Development Bank, Global Bank have sister banks as well. Sanima Development Bank has an Automated teller machine as do the rest of the banks.

Industrial area

A small cottage industry called Gharelu dhaka udyog produces textiles products which is a head industry in Myanglung. Other small industry such as loaf producing factory etc. are auxiliary industries.

Tourism

Manglung attracts domestic and foreign tourists due to its natural beauty. The town serves as a tourist hub of the tourist destination in this region. A lake or pond called chichi lung situated at deurali Dada, teenjure Milke Gurase Hilltop known as the capital of rhododendrons, Hyatrung Waterfall (हयातरूङ झरना) is the highest or longest water fall of Nepal and second in Asia [5][6] situated at Ishibu, Tea garden situated at solma, are places of touristic attraction as well as destination. There are couple of hotels and lodges available in moderate rates.Few hotels are running their business primarily aiming to tourists & to attract the tourist, they have managed few guides for site view or site seeings which acts as an expansion of their business.

Religious centers

Mainly the Myanglung temple is the most visited religious place in Myanglung. Singhabahini temple, Baudha Monastery, church, stupa are places of religious attraction. Apart from these venues, another temple resembling to Myanglung temple or goddess are singha bahini Goddess's temple and pathivara goddess's temple situated to the Western side from Myanglung which are one of the touristic attraction venues. People from around the district often come occasionally by making an occasion of fair day or on a certain day that they have made appointment to see or reverse of goddess.

Business

Agriculture is the main business of people outside Myanglung, whereas peoples have different kind of business within Myanglung such as most of the peoples have adopted agricultural business and rest of them are engaged in jobs. As a whole, vegetables production and selling in local market is regarded as main business.

Haat is conducted twice a week i.e. Friday & Tuesday where local people buy stuff mainly vegetables from the vendors from surrounding villages. People buy their necessary goods from the market. Peoples from surrounding villages as well as various parts of district do come in Myanglung making the occasion of fair day for the purpose of shopping & many more activities.
