My Son Is Gay is an upcoming Hindi-language Indian feature film. The crowd-funded, independent film is written and directed by Lokesh Kumar, a filmmaker from Chennai, India, and initially produced by Anil Saxena and Starlight Unisex Saloon. The film is an emotional journey and struggles of an orthodox mother and her gay son to accept his identity. It stars Anupama Kumar, a noted Tamil actress, as the mother and Nakshatra Bagwe, an actor/filmmaker, as the son.[1][2][3]
Plot
The story of Lakshmi, a mother, and her son Varun, who is gay. Varun struggles to accept his identity and opens up to Lakshmi, who is an orthodox lady. The film is a journey of their struggles to accept reality.
Production
Initially Lokesh planned to take this project as a short film due to limited funding and support. After receiving funding to begin the project, Lokesh approached Nakshatra Bagwe, who he had in mind since writing the script, to play the lead role. He approached Anupama Kumar to do only a cameo due to budget constraints. Anupama was so impressed by the story that she decided to play the lead role of mother without any charge. Lokesh signed up two local talents from Chennai, Jayashree and Sharath, to feature in the film. Auditions were conducted in various parts of country for other important roles.
With crowdfunding, My Son is Gay is set to be India's first crowdfunded LGBT film.[4][5]
