Mutual is a town in Woodward County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 76 at the 2000 census. Incorporated in 1908, the town suffered under the agricultural depression after World War I and saw only minimal growth during the 1970s and 1980s.[3]

Geography

Mutual is located at 36°13′47″N 99°10′4″W / 36.22972°N 99.16778°W (36.229816, -99.167704),[4] approximately 19 miles southeast of Woodward, Oklahoma, the county seat.[3] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2), all of it land.

History

A "Mutual" post office was designated on June 4, 1895. The town was incorporated in 1908. In 1910, the town had a two churches, a bank, a feed mill, a machine shop, and a dealer in poultry and dairy products. The town also had a hotel early on.[3]

The town fared well until the post World War I agricultural depression and the construction of U.S. Highway 270, meant to bypass the town. The town continued to decline until petroleum exploration and production in the 1970s and 1980s gave it a short boost. Mutual ended the 20th century with a half dozen businesses and 76 residents, some of whom commute Woodward or Seiling, Oklahoma for work.[3]

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 76 people, 31 households, and 22 families residing in the town. The population density was 289.9 people per square mile (112.9/km²). There were 38 housing units at an average density of 145.0 per square mile (56.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 75.00% White, 14.47% Native American, 3.95% Asian, 5.26% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.26% of the population.

There were 31 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% were non-families. 29.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town the population was spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 3.9% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 81.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $30,625, and the median income for a family was $53,250. Males had a median income of $21,667 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,524. There were 12.0% of families and 34.5% of the population living below the poverty line, including 83.9% of under eighteens and none of those over 64.
