Kylie Maria Antonia Maybury[1] (1978 – 6 November 1984) was an Australian girl from Preston, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. She was kidnapped, raped and murdered in November 1984.[2]
On the afternoon of 6 November 1984, Maybury had been sent to a convenience store to buy a bag of sugar. She was last seen going home, carrying the bag of sugar and looking lost.[2][3] Maybury's body was found in the gutter of a nearby street around 00:45 that night. She had died of asphyxiation while being raped, and had severe internal injuries, such as vaginal trauma. The autopsy found that diazepam, a strong sedative, was in her body, suggesting that she had been drugged.[4]
Her murder has received significant media coverage. In the 1990s, the Victorian Police focused their attention on Robert Arthur Selby Lowe, the killer of Melbourne schoolgirl Sheree Beasley. DNA profiling later proved that he was not responsible for Maybury's murder. As of 2014, the perpetrator of Maybury's kidnapping, rape, and murder has not been discovered, but the investigation is ongoing, with additional DNA samples being sought. Maybury is interred at Fawkner Crematorium and Memorial Park. Her uncle, Mark Maybury, was a suspect in Kylie's murder; he committed suicide in 1987. He was later found to be innocent, and is buried in the same cemetery as Kylie.[1][2][5]
