M1SandtonJohannesburgSoweto The M1, known for its entire length as the Devilliers Graaf Motorway, is a major north–south freeway that links the northern suburbs of Sandton with the southern township of Soweto. The motorway begins at the Buccleuch Interchange when the N1 changes its designation to the M1 and travels south through Sandton, Houghton and eventually reaching the Johannesburg CBD. The motorway intersects with the M2 (Johannesburg) at the Crown Interchange and makes a south-western direction passing through the southern suburbs. The M1 eventually ends its route at the Uncle Charlie's Interchange with the N12 freeway near Soweto.
M2RoodepoortJohannesburgGermiston The M2 is a west-east freeway linking the western region of Johannesburg; Roodepoort with the Eastern suburb of Germiston. The M2 is known as the Francois Olberhozer Freeway and passes through a majority of the industrial side of the Johannesburg CBD. The freeway begins at the terminus of Main Reef Road and continues in an eastern direction through Johannesburg intersecting with the M1 (Johannesburg) at the Crown Interchange. The freeway passes through many industrial old parts of Johanneburg until it eventually intersects with the N3 Freeway just outside Germiston. It continues for another 2 km before terminating at Refinery Road.
M5Muldersdrift Johannesburg The M5 is a major metropolitan route which links Johannesburg with the outer western areas of the city. It is designated as Beyers Naude Drive for most of its length and is often a 2×3 arterial route for traffic from the western suburbs such as Randburg to travel to Johannesburg, avoiding major highways. The M5 intersects with the N1 and N14 highways and terminates once crossing over the N14 and winding into Muldersdrift.
