Munghana Lonene FM, or MLFM, is a Tsonga language FM radio station in South Africa. In Tsonga, "Munghana Lonene" means "my true friend." Munghana Lonene FM is geared to listeners who understand Xitsonga. The Vatsonga nation include; Varhonga, Va-Xika, Vatshwa, Vadzonga, Vahlangano, Van'walungu, Machangana (Soshangana group which mixed with Vatsonga tribes through intermarriage. The word Shangaan is a name given to the people of Gaza Empire in Mozambique by their founder Soshangane Manukuso Nxumalo. In South Africa, the name Shangaan should not be applied to all Vatsonga chieftains because the Vatsonga people of South Africa were never part of the Gaza empire in Mozambique and some also refused to become part of the Gaza empire since its foundation by Soshangane. A case in point is the Tsonga people under the rule of paramount chief or Hosi-Nkulu Njhakanjhaka of Elim in the Spelenkon district of Makhado. Neither Hosi Nhjakanjhaka nor his people were subordinates of Soshangane. The Tsonga Tembe Rhonga people in Northern Kwazulu Natal under chief MAbhudu Tembe were never part of the Gaza Kingdom either.

MLFM is branded as an "infotainment" radio station with a 50% split of music and talk. It offers an environment interactive with its listeners, providing a mixture of news, music, current affairs, talk shows, education, sport, weather and traffic. The music repertoire consists of Jazz, R&B, Kwaito, House, Gospel music and African music.

MLFM's broadcast area includes Gauteng, Limpopo, and eastern Mpumalanga.

History

On 1 February 1965, initial programmes in the Tsonga language were broadcast for listeners in the then Northern Transvaal, from the Johannesburg studios of the South African Broadcasting Corporation, at that time situated in Broadcast House, Commissioner Street. This service later became known as Radio Tsonga. On 1 February 1984 Radio Tsonga was also broadcast on medium wave from Pietersburg (now Polokwane). On 1 May of the same year, coverage was extended to listeners in Soweto via a low power FM transmitter atop the SABC building at Auckland Park.
