Mulaney is an American sitcom television series that ran for one season from October 2014 to March 2015 on Fox. It was created by stand-up comedian and former Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney, who stars as a fictionalized version of himself. The show features the comedian performing stand-up out of character to the studio audience. The show was canceled in January 2015.[1]

Premise

The show centers around John (John Mulaney), a comedian living in New York City with his roommates— Jane (Nasim Pedrad), a personal trainer with emotional issues, and Motif (Seaton Smith), another comedian who is a ladies' man. John is often given advice by his flamboyant neighbor Oscar (Elliott Gould), and annoyed by his odd friend Andre (Zack Pearlman). John's life changes when he's hired as a writer for Lou Cannon (Martin Short), an eccentric legendary comedian and game show host.

The show was originally taped as a pilot for NBC, but was not picked up.[3] The show was then picked up by Fox with a six-episode commitment.[4] Fox later ordered an additional ten episodes.[5] A trailer was released on May 12, 2014, along with an announcement that the show would air Sunday nights at 9:30 p.m.,[6] replacing the Seth MacFarlane sitcom, American Dad!, which moved to TBS. The series premiered October 5, 2014.

On October 18, 2014, Fox shut down production of the series by reducing the 16-episode order by three episodes. Filming for the thirteenth episode had just been completed prior to the order reduction, and the fourteenth episode was about to enter production.[7] The show was canceled by March 2015.[8]

Reception

Mulaney has been widely panned by critics, with most reviews drawing unflattering comparisons to Seinfeld. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has a "rotten" score of 17%, based on 43 reviews, with an average rating of 4.3 out of 10. The consensus states, "John Mulaney, we know Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld was funny. Mulaney, you're no Seinfeld."[21] On Metacritic, the show has a score of 38 out of 100, based on 27 reviews, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews."[22] The show was named the fourth-worst show of 2014 by Entertainment Weekly.[23]

The series premiere got 2.3 million viewers,[24] the weakest scores for any of the fall's series premieres.[25]

The episode from December 21, 2014, became the lowest rated episode, with fewer than 1 million views; the January 18, 2015 episode, airing after the NFC Championship Game, became the highest-rated, with over 3 million viewers.[26]

Accolades

Despite negative reviews, Mulaney was nominated for People's Choice Awards for Favorite New TV Comedy, but lost to Jane the Virgin.
