Mukerian is a city and biggest municipal council of Hoshiarpur district of Punjab.

Geography

Mukerian is located at 31°57′N 75°37′E / 31.95°N 75.62°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 245 metres (803 feet).

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[2] Mukerian city had a population of 29889. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Mukerian has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 74%. In Mukerian, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. It is an industrial hub.

Mukerian is the city for about 150 villages around it. Located on NH-1A. In Mukerian people mostly belong to Sikh and Hindu religion. There is a very famous Sikh Gurudwara that was earlier the Fort of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's in-laws known as "Qila Atallgarh".

The majority of the population is employed in agriculture and are serving in Indian Defence forces in several capacities. Mukerian is a permanent base of the Indian Armed forces and its south part hosts Unchi Bassi cantonment and Mansar in north. Region hosts majority of military exercises and war games of Indian army.

Mukerian falls under Hoshiarpur parliamentary constituency. Many famous leaders are associated with Mukerian. The late Dr Kewal Krishan, former Speaker in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, and Mr. Arunesh shakir (Ex Cabinet Minister), Miss. Umesh Shakir are from Mukerian. Mr Rajnish Kumar Babbi, is Mukerian's current representative(MLA) in Punjab Legislative Assembly. The oldest and biggest student union of India A.B.V.P. (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarathi Parishad) is also working in Mukerian under the guidence of Suraj Bhardwaj ji (Organisation's General Secretary A.B.V.P) and Aabhas Prabhakar (State Executive A.B.V.P)

Education

Army School Unchi Bassi is the first CBSE affiliated school in the area. Now there are many good schools in close vicinity of Mukerian, St. Joseph's Convent School (ICSE) and Dashmesh Public School(CBSE) being at forefront of them, Dashmesh Public School is under management of SGPC and both schools are situated 3 km from Mukerian in a village named Chak Alla Bakesh. Dasmesh public school is the biggest name providing quality education to a large proportion of students in the city.


There are also two degree colleges in the city - S.P.N College and Dashmesh Girls' College. Late Brig. Mehar Singh (retd) a patriot from Mukerian have been the chairperson of S.P.N College of nursing,(For ANM & GNM & B.Sc. Nursing and For PG) affiliated to Baba Farid University is a well known college with a good hostel facility. Muhammad Sharif Chaudhry S/O Chaudhry Rahimullah was born in Fattuwal in 1922. He was orphaned early, at the age of 8 and brought up by his eldest brother Chaudhry Nazir who was a headmaster of the local village school. Sharif went on to study agriculture at Agricultural College, Lyallpur. In 1956 he received the Ford Foundation scholarship to enter the Agricultural Economics graduate program at Cornell University, USA. Upon his return to Pakistan in 1958, he joined th Pakistan Academy for Rural Development as a founder member. In 1967 he received another scholarship to do his PhD in Agricultural Economics at Washington State University, USA. He has served in Libya as a professor of agricultural economics at University of Tripoli, and later as a consultant to the Libyan Agricultural Research Buereau. He retired from the US AID program in 1988. His lifelong ambition was to return to his home village of Fattuwal which did not materialize. He died in 1998.

Points of interest

Mukerian Hydel Project is one of the biggest irrigation projects in India. The Pong Dam across river Beas is about 35 km from Mukerian. Mukerian is located on National Highway 1A and about 450 km north of New Delhi. Mukerian City is a junction for Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Talwara and Jalandhar by road.

A "miraculous" famous Lord Shiva temple is in the village of Kathgarh/Mirthal, about 20 km from Mukerian city. There is a natural Shiva ling in the temple. Shiva-Parbati "PINDIES" (the holy stone) get apart in summer & get attached in the winter season. Thousands of devotees come here for worship and prayer. Another famous temple is in the village "sahoda" near hajipur famous with the name "GAGAN ji KA TILLA".

The Historical gurudawara is located in village "attalgarh", which was built by IN-LAWS of 'MAHARAJA RANJIT SINGH JI' named 'Quilla Attalgarh'.

A very old temple of lord shiva is situated outside the village puro nagal barota named "dera baba mastgir g."

The heavenly heritage asharam of "PARAMHANS BAGH, MUKERIAN" which is built in the memory of late Sri Sri 1008 "Mahant Ramadeen Das ji maharaj". Who has got salvation after completing 143 years of his life

Shiri Guru Hargobind Sahib Miri Piri Gatka Akhara is the First gatka akhara of the mukerian, which was started from 2009 at B.S.P.S Khalsa Sen. Sec. School Mukerian. The First President Of Gatka Aakhara Mr. Er. Ravinder Singh khalsa.

Economy

Mukerian has some 32 rice mills (including Chajju Ram Muni Lal Rice and General Mills and Ohri Rice Mills) from which almost all the rice is exported to the Middle East and Europe. It is also a main market for the surrounding area. Chajju Ram Muni Lal Rice & Gen (CEE EMM RICE MILL) and Ganpati rice mill, a well known rice mill established at Mukerian City. Panjdhera Rice Mill has recently started its operation at nearby village Panjdhera.

   The sugar mill at the south of the city is one of the biggest sugar mills in Punjab.

Mukerian paper ltd. is the industry and distillery is the major employer in the region. The town's market is one of the most desired places for the customer of 'KANDI AREA', the market is having very much potential as compare to the nearby towns. The market is famous for 'ladies apparel and accessories' and the mechanical tools.

The transport business is one of the back bone of Mukerian's economy. Some of the famous shops in the mukerian is suresh book depot, gupta books,Pesco Computer and Darshan Di Hatti in old Sabzi Mandi Mukerian.
