Muchosa

Alphonse Gheux, Wallonian piper

The muchosa is a type of bagpipe currently played mainly in Hainaut, Wallonia, Belgium, but which was previously known down into the north of France as far as Picardy.

The muchosa has a chanter with a conical bore and double reed, pitched to B-flat. It has two single-reeded drones. The treble drone is placed in a common stock with the chanter, and the bass drone is placed further back in its own stock. In this sense it is very similar to other bagpipes in central and northern France (musette type).

Notable players of the muchosa include Jean-Pierre Van Hees, Rémy Dubois, Denis Laoureux, Peter De Baets, Bernard Vanderheyden, Rémi Decker, Jean Cayron.
