Mt Eden (band)

Mt Eden[1] (also known as Mt. Eden and formerly named Mt Eden Dubstep) are a dubstep production duo from New Zealand consisting of Jesse Cooper and Harley Rayner.[2] Their most well-known songs are their original "Sierra Leone" (a remix of Freshlyground's "I'd Like"[3]), their remix of Delerium's "Silence" and Lisa Miskovsky's "Still Alive" which is currently their most viewed song on YouTube with more than 40 million views combined,[4][5][6][7] however, previous uploads of "Sierra Leone" have reached over 29 million views before being removed.
They started gaining popularity when their remix of Freshlyground's "I'd Like",[3] "Sierra Leone", went viral on YouTube in 2009.[8] They currently have 100 million combined video views and over 210 thousand subscribers on their YouTube channel, as well as more than 310,000 "likes" on their Facebook page.[9][10]
Mt Eden is currently signed with Ultra Music for a multi-album record deal.[11][12]

Background

Cooper and Rayner met when they were around 12-years-old and started making mixtapes on the weekends. At first, they mostly made hip hop music but decided to instead make dubstep after they heard Benga and Skream at the New Zealand festival Phat09 and had their "minds blown" by the young genre.[13] They also started making some drum and bass around the same time.
One of the first songs Mt Eden made public was "Sierra Leone" (a remix of Freshlyground's "I'd Like"[3]), which they uploaded and posted on their Myspace page, but it didn't go viral until a fan posted the track on YouTube.[8]
In 2010, Rayner's brother suggested he make a YouTube page for the duo to post music on. He called the page "MtEdenDnB08" because they lived in Mt Eden. That was when Rayner and Cooper decided to call themselves Mt Eden Dubstep, later changing their name to just simply Mt Eden. Many of their songs they posted on their YouTube page received millions of views over time, resulting in their fanbase growing rapidly.

Mt Eden released their first EP "Meds EP" for digital download on December 7, 2010.[14] It has gotten mostly positive reviews by customers on iTunes and in the comments of the YouTube videos Mt Eden posted of the EP's tracks.
