The character is a spoof of Mrs. Emma Peel, one of the main characters from the television series The Avengers.[1][2]

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

In the year 1967, Marie Kensington was Austin Powers' old side-kick. Austin and Marie make their way to a London nightclub and after an assassination attempt on Austin, see Dr. Evil there. Austin and Marie try to stop him. However, Dr. Evil escapes in a space rocket disguised as a Bob's Big Boy statue, where he places himself in a cryogenic freezing chamber to return sometime in the future. Therefore Austin volunteers to have himself placed in cryostasis in case his services are needed in the future.

Later, on 10 June 1970, Marie gave birth to a daughter, Vanessa, and later retired, causing confusion when Austin is told Miss Kensington will be working with him.

Austin married Vanessa at the end of the first film, but she was shown to be a fembot in the second film. Marie's fate after Vanessa's identity is revealed is unknown.
