Marie Hsiao (born November 1, 1993), best known as Mree, is an indie folk singer-songwriter from New Jersey. She is of Taiwanese and Bulgarian descent. Mree began writing her own songs at the age of 14[1] and released her debut album, Grow, in October 2011. The album debuted at #18 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Chart.
Music career
She began her career, like many young artists today, performing cover songs on YouTube helping gain her several million video views and tens of thousands of subscribers and Facebook fans worldwide.[2] In 2011, she successfully crossed over to an original artist releasing her self-produced, full length, debut album entitled, “Grow” [3] The album debuted at #18 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Chart.[2]
Mree released her second album "Winterwell", which is also self-produced and self-recorded, on 6 August 2013. In this new album, "clearly taking influence from artists such as Bon Iver and Sufjan Stevens, she combines a folk soul with an alternative, electronic and ambient sound while maintaining an ethereal, classical edge." [4]
On 7 August 2013, "Winterwell" trended at No.52 on iTunes top alternative albums charts. In 2014, the album was awarded at Independent Music Awards in the "best producer" category, with jurors praising "the sophisticated soundscapes that cushion the songs".[5] As a performer, Mree has appeared at New York City venues including the Highline Ballroom, Rockwood Music Hall, and The Studio at Webster Hall.[6]
In 2013, a Target commercial was released that featured a thirty second clip of an original Christmas song by her entitled "Santa Catcher."[7]
