Mr. Capone-E is a rapper. After allegedly being released from prison* in 1998 he decided to become a rapper . Capone-E established his own record label, Hi-Power Entertainment.[1] and later signed to Thump Records, where he released his later works including his 2003 album Dedicated 2 the Oldies in which he interpolated songs like "Angel Baby" by Rosie & the Originals.[2] Mr. Capone-E's first album to chart on the American Billboard charts was A Soldier's Story from 2006, which reached #30 on the Top Heatseekers chart.[3] Mr. Capone-E, has described his music as "Sureño hip hop", a Mexican-American style of hip hop. Many within the Mexican-American community feel that Azam exploits their culture and misrepresents them. [4]
In 2006, Capone-E collaborated with Twista for the single "Don't Get It Twisted". The song charted at #40 on the Billboard Rhythmic Top 40 chart.[5]
Solo career
2001-2010
Mr. Capone-E released his first solo album in 2001 titled "Last Man Standing". His second solo album Reys Town[2] was released the following year in 2002 after signing a 3-year distribution deal with Thump Records, a partner of Universal Records. That year he met Mr. Criminal at a low rider car show and helped him have his first break. The two artists recorded a track called "Criminal Mentality", released on Capone-E’s Thump Records Music Group which gained widespread international popularity in 2003.
In 2002, Mr. Capone-E released his DVD, A Day in the Life of Mr. Capone followed by in 2003 his highly anticipated 3rd album, Mr. Capone-E: Dedicated to the Oldies,[2] which sold over half a million copies and still continues selling units today.
Mr. Capone-E went back to Thump who released his 5th album, Soldier Story, in 2005 and his sixth album, Zap & Mr. Capone-E Vol.1 & 2, which was widely accepted by the streets.[2]
Money issues began to surface between Mr. Capone-E and Thump, which ultimately led to unpaid royalties to Mr. Capone-E. He was advised to leave Thump based on the amount of albums he was selling per release and that any distribution house would sign him. Mr. Capone-E retained all the rights to his music released under Thump.
In 2006, Mr. Capone-E released his seventh album, distributed under SMC, Don’t get it Twisted, including the hit single “Don’t Get it Twisted” ft. Twista,[5] which peaked at #18 on the Top Heatseekers Album Chart, #25 on the Independent Albums Chart and #68 on the Billboard R&B/Rap Albums.[3]
In 2007, Mr. Capone-E signed an independent direct distribution deal with Koch and released his eighth album, Mr. Capone-E: Dedicated to the Oldies Part II in ’08, which peaked at #17 on the Top Heatseekers Albums Chart[3] and #66 on the Billboard R&B/ Hip Hop Album.[3]
In 2009, Mr. Capone-E released his ninth album, Diary of a G, including the hit single “Light my Fire” ft. Snoop Dogg and collaborations with The Game and Glasses Malone, which peaked at #18 on the Billboard Rap Album Charts and #24 on the Top Heatseekers Album Charts.[3]
Following the releases of his highly successful albums, Mr. Capone-E released The Blue Album in 2010 and Mr. Capone-E: Tears of a Soldier for his fans.[2]
Hi Power Entertainment
Mr. Capone-E began to sign more underground artists which was the birth of Hi-Power Entertainment, Mr. Capone-E’s record label.[6]
Under Hi Power Ent., Mr. Capone-E signed over 30 artists including Bizzy Bone and Layzie Bone of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Suga Free, MC Eiht and Lil Flip.
