Mountain Lake Township is a township in Cottonwood County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 384 at the 2010 census.[3]
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.8 square miles (93 km2), of which 35.7 square miles (92 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2), or 0.17%, is water.
Demographics
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 442 people, 99 households, and 88 families residing in the township. The population density was 12.4 people per square mile (4.8/km²). There were 101 housing units at an average density of 2.8/sq mi (1.1/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.61% White, 2.26% African American, 0.68% Asian, and 0.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.49% of the population.
There were 99 households out of which 48.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 84.8% were married couples living together, 2.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 11.1% were non-families. 9.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.91 and the average family size was 4.11.
In the township the population was spread out with 43.7% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 12.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.1 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $27,143, and the median income for a family was $27,639. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $15,000 for females. The per capita income for the township was $8,240. About 25.8% of families and 49.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 59.8% of those under age 18 and 37.3% of those age 65 or over.
Politics
Mountain Lake Township is located in Minnesota's 1st congressional district, represented by Mankato educator Tim Walz, a Democrat. At the state level, Mountain Lake Township is located in Senate District 22, represented by Republican Doug Magnus, and in House District 22B, represented by Republican Rod Hamilton.
