Mount Rosary Church (Portuguese: De Nossa Senhora do Melagres de Calliampoor) is a Roman Catholic church situated in Kallianpur in the Udupi district. The church came into existence in 1837 at the time of the Goan schism when some Catholic families withdrew from their Parish Milagres Cathedral and acknowledged the jurisdiction of the Vicar Apostolic of Verapoly. They built a church only a few yards away from the Milagres Cathedral. Since then it has undergone alterations and additions. It is strategically located close to the NH 66.
History
During the Padraodo-Propaganda controversy, a large number of Catholic families withdrew from their parish church of Our Lady of Miracles, Kallianpur. While a good number of the parishioners of Kallianpur-Milagres were loyal to the Goan Bishop of Karwar, 42 families acknowledged the jurisdiction of Vicar Apostolic of Verapoly and built a new thatched roof church in 1837, adjacent to the Milagres church on the land donated by Anthony Rebello of Thonse. It was later moved to the Nejar Hill near by and rebuilt in 1882 and was called Mount Rosary church. In 1886 Bishop Pagani gave permission to keep the Blessed Sacrament in the church. In 1880 Fr Albert D’Souza (1879-1890) started a new church, the foundation stone of which was blessed by Bishop Pagani on 26 November 1880. He could not complete it, and so, Mathias Rebello of Thonse pledged his property, took a loan and completed the church building. The first mass was offered on 14 May 1882. On 9 January 1883, the statue of Holy Rosary was installed in the church. The church also got some land from the Patel, Ignatius Fernandes.
Today, the church can boast of having more than 400 families as its parishioners. This is largely due to the development of infrastructural projects in and around the area, and its proximity to markets, shops, banks, hospital (Goretti Hospital), educational institutions. In addition to this, the Church runs the Mount Rosary English school which has made its name known in the District, due to the impressive results in academic, sports and extra curricular activities. The Church also has its own function hall (Mount Rosary Millennium Hall) & Commercial complex.
