Following a tradition of Mounds View Mustang strength in inter-school competitions, the Mounds View Math Team is also one of the powerhouse teams in Minnesota. Although it competes in several invitational and smaller scale competitions, the team mainly focuses on the two main Minnesota mathematics competitions: the Minnesota State High School Mathematics League (MSHSML) and the Minnesota Math League. Since its beginning as a powerhouse in 1995, Mounds View has accumulated numerous prestigious championships. The biggest target championships of Mounds View (and the majority of top math teams in the state) are the MSHSML regular season championship (the team that has performed the best overall in the season), the MSHSML state tournament championship (the winner of a one-day meet between the top 35 teams of the regular season), and the Minnesota Math League Champions.
