Motkur or Mothkur (population: approx. 55,699) is an agricultural and goods marketing town in the Nalgonda district, in the state of Telangana, India. It is one of the major Gram Panchayats in the state of Telangana. It has few hamlets under it.

Geography

Motkur or Mothkur is located at 17°27′00″N 79°16′00″E / 17.4500°N 79.2667°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 292 metres (961 ft).

Mothkur is situated in the assembly constituency of Tungathurty, and a revenue division of Bhuvanagiri. It is a mandal headquarters and a former taluk. The present Thungathurty MLA Gadari Kishore Kumar TRS and this was under Ramannapet constituency earlier. The MLA was Vuppunuthala Purushottam Reddy, he was telangana planning and development board chairman.

It is a regional trade centre for the three mandals of Mothkur, Atmakur and Gundala. It is located on the banks of Bikkeru a tributary of Musi River which itself is a tributary of river Krishna. Roads are the only mode of transport to this town. There are many shops and grocery stores that cater the needs of the people who live in villages surrounding Mothkur.

The town consists of Old Mothkur and New Mothkur. New Mothkur is also called as Pothaigadda. Old Mothkur is also called as the old bus stand area. New Mothkur is well planned and has many residential colonies like the Drivers Colony, Padmashaali Colony, Teachers Colony, Lourdu Nagar, Venkateswara Colony and Sundarayya Colony. The town has a lake on which there is a road towards Tirumalagiri. Most of the government offices are situated after the crossing with the lake.

Mothkur has great legacy.The Prominent "Kalvala (warrior class)" family members have been living in Mothkur and abroad for about 6 generations. Late Shri Kalvala Narahari Rao (1891–1942) was Vathandar (Mali Patel) in Nizam governament, great Philanthropist, and a landed gentry. Developed community common water wells, community marriage system, temples, various charities. At times risked his personal welfare and went against Nizam Revenue officer and allowed to develop wet lands by conserving water bodies . Very instrumental in organizing and celebrating major festivals like Ugadhi, Dasara, Bonalu for the harmony of the village in all levels.Still people are fallowing tradition established by late Sri Kalvala Nrahari Rao Few more known persons from Mothkur Mandal:

1. Late Shri Kalvala Prabhakar Rao, Ex-Member of Parliament Rajya Sabha(1986–1992). in his tenure built a road bridge between Mothkur and Gondola mandal and Water resource to Agriculture for SC community.

2. Late M.Ranga Reddy worked as Secretary Hyderabad Cricket Association and Vice President of BCCI.

Though the majority of the people are Hindus, the town has substantial presence of Muslims, and a little Christian community. The town has the Ramalingeshwara temple belonging to medieval India (probably Kakatiyas), Peddamma Temple which was constructed by late Sri Kalevala Narahari Rao later modification done by people in leadership of Kalevala Prakash Raidu son of Sri Narahari Rao, SaiBaba temple at potaigadda Sainagar (under construction), a mosque and a missionary run chapel. Every year at Ramalingeshwara swamy temple a local festival called "Agni Gundalu (అగ్ని గుండాలు )" is conducted after the famous Hindu festival Holi. Many people attend for this local festival from nearby villages.

It is an agricultural town with a small sized food processing industry, mainly rice mills, and vegetable oil mills. Wet paddy is the major crop, other crops include red chili peppers, cotton, green gram, castor and other vegetables and pulses. It is a developing town. Marketing of natural goods is the major source. There are petrol pumps (HPCL and IOC). Paddy marketing is the major resource.

Weekend Market (అంగడి ): Every Sunday there will be a local weekend Market (called "అంగడి" in Local Language Telugu) is conducted. This market is famous for sale of Animals used for agriculture, vegetables, clothes and common groceries. This is one of the biggest local market in the 3 mandals of Mothur, Gundala and Athmakur. This town has one cinema theatre – Venkateshwara Theatre.

Festivals

Festivals such as "Bathukamma", "Dasara", "Ugaadi"(Telugu New Year Day),"Bonalu" & "Sankranthi" are celebrated with great enthusiasm. These festivals are celebrated in community like manner means, all the town residents gather on the occasion of Dasara then proceed to "Jammi" chettu. After performing pooja there, all people greet each other with "Jammi-aaku" On the Day of UGADI (Telugu New Year)the people will celebrate the new year with Bonaalu, this is the only place when Bonalu will be performed on the day Ugadi. In the evening of UGADI to check the individual astrological forecast for the impending year.
