Moses Aupaluktuq is a territorial politician from Nunavut, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut from 2008 to 2013.

Political career

Aupaluktuq ran for a seat to the Nunavut Legislature as a candidate in the Baker Lake in the 2008 territorial election. He defeated incumbent David Simailak in a hotly contested three way race taking just over 41% of the popular vote.[1]

Aupaluktuq also served as president and chairman of the board of directors of the Kivalliq Partners in Development Corporation (2005-2008). He also served as the first president of the National Inuit Youth Council (1994-1996) as well as the vice-president of the Inuit Youth Circumpolar Conference (1994-1996), board member of the Inuit Tapiriisat of Canada (1994-1996), and resident of the Kivalliq Hall Student Residence Council (1991-1992)

Criminal charges

Aupaluktuq had a turbulent first term in office. Royal Canadian Mounted Police have charged him with liquor related offenses in two separate incidents. His first offense occurred on November 7, 2009 when police charged him with a drunk driving offense after he was found sleeping in his vehicle while it was in snow in driveway on private property citing he has no keys to enter his home in the community of Baker Lake, Nunavut.[2]

Aupaluktuq refuted the impaired driving charge, stating that the traffic incident happened as the vehicle was stuck in snow in driveway on private residence property and the vehicle had already been in the driveway the day before.

His second charge came on October 1, 2010 in which he was charged with unlawful possession of liquor. A liquor permit was proven later and charges dropped.[2]

I am Lori Morina who was Moses' partner at the time. The information you have here is salacious, and very whimsical. It was our house in which he vehicle was stuck and it was stuck the day before your allegations, due to snow and a long sloop on our property. On the New Year's Hamlet parade, cars got stuck in the same place. The following week the Hamlet was quick to fill in the hole where, they, and Moses' vehicle got stuck.. The information you have delivered here is most inaccurate and hurtful. You have portrayed this individual as someone he isn't. We had a disagreement, I asked him to leave the premises, as couples might do; the Bylaw Officer saw an opportunity and took advantage. And then the RCMP did the same. Mr Aupaluktuq was a politician who wanted to make a difference. As regards the "illegal liquor charge", Moses had a permit which was lawful. Check it out and change the history.
