This album was yet another smash for Mathis, peaking at #2 on the Billboard album chart in its original release, his eighth consecutive album to chart.[1]

Broadway and Hollywood songs

Of the singles included on the album, arranged and conducted by Ray Ellis and Glenn Osser, two are from Broadway shows while a further cut is the theme song for a Hollywood film. At the time, it was common for popular vocalists to record songs from Broadway shows especially those in which a recording company had a financial interest. Thus it's not surprising that Mathis would record show tunes for singles release. "You Are Beautiful" is from the score of "Flower Drum Song" which opened on Broadway in 1958. The score of this show was by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and is the first of many songs by this team recorded by Mathis over the years. "Small World" by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim is from the score of "Gypsy: A Musical Fable" which opened on Broadway in 1959.

Mathis has recorded many films songs over the years, some of which played over the opening titles. In 1958's "A Certain Smile", he is seen in the film performing its haunting theme, a song that continues as part of his concert repertoire. The film version differs from the single included on this album and features an upward modulating ending. The film, a lavish soap opera, featured Rossano Brazzi, Joan Fontaine, Bradford Dillman and Christine Carère.
