Moonstar88 is a Filipino rock band formed in Manila, Philippines.
As of April 2008, they have released three albums, Popcorn, Press to Play and Todo Combo, and collaborated on one track, Pag-Ibig Ko Sa Iyo, found on RoK On! Music Inspired By Ragnarok Online.
They also performed a rendition of the APO song, "Panalangin" which they recorded and was added to the tribute album for the band, Apo Hiking Society, on the Kami nAPO Muna album.
History
Moonstar88 was formed in 1999. The name of the band was chosen after they had landed a gig, but did not have a name for their band. They listed several names and when they were about to perform, eventually choosing "Moonstar" and adding the number 88 since Moonstar was the 88th name on the list. They were signed to Sony BMG by 2007, and later to Ivory Records in 2012.
The band's members all maintain successful careers outside their work as musicians. Baay is a pharmacist with academic achievements outside music; Bernaldo is a famous video director; Sundiang is a Marketing Manager; and Hernandez is an accomplished Creative Director. Previously under Backbeat Management, they are now with Soupstar Management under Darwin Hernandez (Herbert's brother) which also handles other famous bands such as Sandwich, Callalily, 6cyclemind, Pedicab and many more.
The band has also recorded a cover of Yano's famous song, Senti.
At Present
After the success of their studio albums and chart-topping hits like “Torete”, “Sulat”, and “Migraine”, Moonstar88, rises to new heights with the release of their newest album “This Year” which took two and a half years to finish, from pre-production, demo and playing the songs live on gigs. The album is under Ivory Music and contains 8 tracks, including a special track featuring Parokya Ni Edgar’s Chito Miranda and an acoustic version of “Migraine”
“This Year” also wins the Best Design Packaging Category in the ADOBO Design Awards 2013 held last April 26 at the Ayala Museum, Makati City. The very creative album cover is a special pop-up packaging that was designed by JP Cuison of Gigzilla.
