Moonshiners is an American docudrama television series on the Discovery Channel that dramatizes the life of people who produce (illegal) moonshine in the Appalachian Mountains of North and South Carolina and Virginia. The series dramatizes their liquor production efforts, law-evading techniques and life.[1] There have been claims by local officials that the show is not what it portrays to be. Virginia authorities have stated that no illegal liquor is actually being produced by the people depicted in the show. The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) said in March 2012 that, "If illegal activity was actually taking place, the Virginia ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement would have taken action."[2] They also said that they had requested for the producers to add a disclaimer to clarify that the show was only a dramatization, "but the request was overlooked."[2] However, star Tim Smith has stated “With the laws in Virginia, and I’m pretty sure around anywhere else, you must be witnessed and physical samples of what you’re producing have to be taken and analyzed. All of this has to be produced in a court of law and then that arresting officer has to testify. How are you going to arrest me for moonshining I did five years ago?"[3] The show’s producers, Magilla Entertainment, also stated their documentary is the real deal.[4]
Portions of the show that feature Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton were taken from a documentary film by Neal Hutcheson. Hutcheson's documentary was filmed in 2002 and released the same year with the title This is the Last Dam Run of Likker I'll Ever Make.[5] In 2008, a version of the documentary that was edited for television was broadcast on PBS and the Documentary Channel[6] with the title The Last One, and it received a Southeast Emmy Award in 2009.[7] Sutton was arrested in 2007 by ATF agents in Cocke County, Tennessee (led by Jim Cavanaugh of Waco siege fame) for illegally distilling liquor and felony possession of a firearm, and was sentenced to eighteen months in jail in 2009. He subsequently committed suicide, apparently to avoid serving the federal prison term, also because he had been diagnosed with cancer.[8]
The show's first season premiered on December 6, 2011, and its second season premiered on November 7, 2012. Season 3 premiered on November 3, 2013. Season 4 premiered on November 4, 2014.[9]

Cast descriptions
Descriptions of cast member characters are listed in this section, based on their depiction in the show – which includes some amount of fiction mixed with fact:
- Moonshiners:
- The moonshiner team of Tim and Tickle is featured in both season 1 and season 2 (operating out of Pittsylvania County, Virginia):
- Tim Smith: Tim is a moonshiner. Descended from three generations of moonshiners and bootleggers, Tim has been around moonshine his entire life. His earliest memories were of helping his father hide moonshine in secret stash spots around the family farm. Tim is also the chief of the local fire department. He lives in Climax, VA with his wife where he is the Chief of the local volunteer Fire Department, Shelby and son, JT. Tim wants to get out of the illicit business and spends much of Season 2 making arrangements to go legal. Season 3 chronicles Tim's struggles at Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky.
- Chico: Tim's former partner at the distillery who was working a contract position as a delivery driver. Chico has a criminal record. Chico eventually joins Tickle after being fired from the distillery.
- Tickle: Tim's right-hand man. Like Tim, Tickle is a native of southwestern Virginia. He is a hard working still hand who loves moonshine and cooking. During season 2, he splits from Tim and tries to go into business for himself. Season 3 follows Tickle's attempts to supply moonshine for Tim's old customers after the latter goes legal and hands the reigns of his empire over to Tickle.
- Howard: A new "still hand" recruited as Tickle's assistant in season 2.
- The team of Mark, Jeff, and Jim Tom (operating out of Graham County, North Carolina):
- Jeff: A man who has spent most of his working life as both a logger and a bulldozer operator. Though he comes from seven generations of moonshiners, Jeff never wanted to practice making moonshine until the recession left him unemployed.
- Mark: A man who grew up so isolated from mainstream society that he was 14 years old before he ever saw money. When he was a child, Mark's family lived in a cabin far from the nearest town. They survived by living entirely off the land, hunting or growing all their food. Mark has spent the last thirty years working as a hunting guide and making moonshine. Mark is also Jeff's brother-in-law.
- Jim Tom Hedrick: A moonshiner and storyteller. He has been a biker, pilot, ham radio operator, and musician, while also producing corn liquor. He has been making moonshine for sixty years, and even brewed while he was in prison. After an argument with Jeff and Mark, Jim Tom breaks from the group and mentors a new shiner, Wayne.
- Wayne: Wayne is a newcomer to moonshining, using the trade to supplement his day job of meat delivery and help pay for his son's education.
- Lynn: Jeff's wife.
- Lance: Jeff and Lynn's son.
- The Josh and Bill group are working on an underground still at the site of a music festival in South Carolina in season 2, inspired by their deceased friend Barney Barnwell's dream of building such a still:
- Josh: A lumberjack, biker, and moonshiner who splits his time between South and North Carolina. Long before he became a moonshiner, Josh had a career as a professional superbike and motocross racer. He now sometimes rides a motorcycle with his dog "Cutie Pie" riding on the handlebars.
- Bill: A man who, when not remodeling homes or making moonshine with Josh, plays fiddle with several local country music bands. He also plays guitar, banjo, and mandolin. Bill grew up in North Carolina, but now lives in South Carolina.
- Moonshiner X (operating out of Johnston County, North Carolina): An unidentified man who is described as being someone who runs a major moonshining operation. Partway through season 2, he withdraws from participating in the show for fear of being arrested.
- The Mike and Tweedy moonshiners:
- Mike: A moonshiner first appearing in season 2. After fifteen years out of the business, Mike wants to make enough moonshine to help his brother, who had health problems. His brother unfortunately passed away sometime after season 2.
- Tweedy: A moonshiner first appearing in season 2.
- The Mississippi Moonshiners (introduced in season 3)
- Darlene: Darlene is a horse trainer, barrel racer, and breeder looking to sell moonshine throughout the barrel racing circuit and prove that women can make shine just as good as the men.
- Mike: A construction worker and horse dentist up north and a shiner in the swamps
- Shot: Mike's partner who started moonshining after a decline in corn subsidies
- The moonshiner team of Tim and Tickle is featured in both season 1 and season 2 (operating out of Pittsylvania County, Virginia):
- Law enforcement officers:
- Jesse: A Special Agent for the Virginia Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control. In season 1, he was trying to catch various moonshiners in Virginia. He did not return for the show's second season.
- Chuck: A Deputy Sheriff who is a law enforcement veteran and has spent the last decade trying to catch bootleggers and moonshiners. He joined the show in season 2 after Jesse's departure.
Spinoff
In May 2013, it was announced that, in addition to renewing Moonshiners for a third season, Discovery Channel would be purchasing a spinoff about Tickle, to be called Tickle.[43] The series premiered on August 13, 2013.[44]
