Moon, also spelled Mun, is a Korean family name, a single-syllable Korean given name, and an element in some two-syllable Korean given names. Its meaning differs based on the hanja used to write it.
Family name
As a family name, Moon may be written with either of two hanja, one meaning "gate" (門; 문 문 mun mun) and the other meaning "writing" (文; 글월 문 geulwon mun). The first has one bon-gwan in what is today South Korea: Incheon. The second has three: Gamcheon-myeon, Yecheon County, Gyeongsangbuk-do; Nampyeong (南平), in what is today Daegu; and Jeongseon County, Gangwon-do.[1] The 2000 South Korean census estimated that 426,927 people had these family names.[2]
