Monica Bedi (born 18 January 1975, in Hoshiarpur, Punjab) is an actress and television presenter. She debuted in Hindi films in the mid-1990s.
Early and personal life
Bedi was born to Dr. Prem Kumar Bedi and Shakuntala Bedi in 1975 in the village Chabbewal, district Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Her parents moved to Norway in 1979. At the end of her under-graduation in India, she joined Oxford University, United Kingdom for reading literature; simultaneously, her acting education got completed at Delhi University in 1995.[1]
Career
Bedi got her first break in Tollywood in the film Taj Mahal (1995), produced by D. Ramanaidu. Apart from Taj Mahal, Ramanaidu also cast her in Sivayya and Speed Dancer (produced by TVD Prasad).[2] She debuted in Bollywood with Surakshaa (1995 film), opposite Saif Ali Khan.
Bedi was a participant in Big Boss Season 2, a television-based reality show.[3] She was one of the contestants of the reality dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 3. She was also a contestant on the Desi Girl reality show.
She sung the chants "EkOnkar" for a spiritual music album on Universal Music.[4]
Bedi acted in her first Punjabi movie Sirphire (2012), directed by Harjit Singh Ricky and winning the PTC Award for "best debut".
Jail sentence
In September 2002, she was arrested with Abu Salem by the Lisbon police for entering Portugal on forged documents.[5] They served jail sentence in Portugal.[6] On 29 September 2006, an Indian Court convicted Bedi for passport forgery for procuring a passport on a fictitious name.[7] In November 2010, the Supreme Court of India upheld her conviction but reduced the jail term to the period that she had already served.[8]
