Mondli Cele (born 3 November 1989 in Durban) is a South African football player who plays as a midfielder for Maritzburg United in the Premier Soccer League.[1]

Career

Cele joined Port Shepstone-based Second Division club Gamalakhe United in 2012. Cele came under the spotlight in 2014 where he was spotted in a televised Nedbank Cup match against Engen Santos by Maritzburg United assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi. He was invited to train with the club and returned in pre-season to sign a contract.[2]

Maritzburg United

Cele made his professional debut on 8 August 2014 in a 1–1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns under Steve Komphela. On his debut, Cele was fouled by Mame Niang inside the penalty-area resulting in a penalty converted by Mohammed Awal to give United a late equaliser.[3] His first two goals came in consecutive matches on 18 October 2014 in a 3–1 win over Platinum Stars and a 4–1 win over Supersport United on 22 October 2014.[4]

International career

Cele earned his first call-up in December 2014, barely six months as a professional. Cele was dubbed a "surprise inclusion" in Ephraim Mashaba's provisional 34 man squad to compete in the 2015 AFCON in Equatorial Guinea.[5]
