The Monarchy of Tanganyika (the Tanganyikan monarchy) was the system of government in which a hereditary monarch was the sovereign of Tanganyika from 1961 to 1962. Tanganyika shared the Sovereign with the other Commonwealth realms. The monarch's constitutional roles were mostly delegated to the Governor-General of Tanganyika. The royal succession was governed by the English Act of Settlement of 1701.

The monarchy was abolished in 1962, when Tanganyika became a republic within the Commonwealth. Tanganyika merged with the Zanzibar in 1964 after the Zanzibari Revolution to form Tanzania.

History

The Monarchy of Tanganyika was created by the Tanganyika Independence Act 1961 which transformed the United Nations trust territory of Tanganyika into the independent sovereign constitutional monarchy of Tanganyika. Tanganyika adopted a new constitution in 1962 which abolished the monarchy.
