The Monarchy of Sierra Leone (the Sierra Leonean monarchy) was the system of government in which a hereditary monarch was the sovereign of Sierra Leone from 1961 to 1971. Sierra Leone shared the Sovereign with the other Commonwealth realms. The monarch's constitutional roles were mostly delegated to the Governor-General of Sierra Leone. The royal succession was governed by the English Act of Settlement of 1701.
The monarchy was abolished in 1971, when Sierra Leone became a republic within the Commonwealth.
History
The Monarchy of Sierra Leone was created by the Sierra Leone Independence Act 1961 which transformed the British Crown Colony of Sierra Leone into the independent sovereign constitutional monarchy of Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone adopted a new constitution in 1971 which abolished the monarchy.
